Provisional Restorations | 60506 Dentist

Dentist Aurora

Most of the times when patients undergo complicated restorative procedures, they will be supplied with temporary or provisional restorations while they patiently wait for their permanent prosthetics to get ready.

These temporary restorations serve the following purpose;

  1. They allow the patients to try their smile so as to know how the new restorations will feel like or how they will feel when they have them. This allows for any adjustments to be made before they get the final product.
  2. They act as space savers taking the place of the ones that are yet to be made. This is ideal because when a gap is formed the adjacent teeth will start to move towards the gap. This ultimately shifts the mouth. In the end this can lead to bite misalignment and many other problems.
  3. The provisional restorations may act as a protector for teeth that are waiting for natural restoration. For example a crown. A temporary crown is able to stop any pain or tooth sensitivity when chewing or biting.
  4. Lastly, a provisional restoration is responsible for the prevention of problems with day to day functions such as eating and speech.

How are they made?

Provisionals are made in a dental lab with the help of a dental technician. Fox Valley Dental has highly skilled technicians who will make them from casts, wax molds, or digital imagery taken of the patient.

Depending upon the intricacy of the restoration as well as the treatment, they may take a few days to weeks in order to be ready. In the meantime, the aurora dentist will look to prepare the area ready for the teeth that will be temporary. As soon as the temporaries are ready from the lab, they are attached and stay in the mouth until the permanent ones are ready.

How Long Will I wear the Restorations For?

This mainly depends on the treatment. For a simple crown, it may just take a few days, for veneers it may range from 1-2 months and 4-9 month if it is dental implants.

The Aurora dentist advises patients never to worry about wearing temporary restorations. In the modern dental world, they are just as effective as the original ones. The only major difference is that they are made out of acrylic, composite, or aluminum materials. All these can be made to fit the tooth/teeth very fast.

Moreover, temporary restorations are usually held in place with temporary bonding rather with permanent cement.

Please Note

Temporary restorations are only provisional and therefore are less durable compared to the permanent ones. You should therefore be very careful to follow the guidelines of your dentist in order to take care of them because they can easily be damaged or shift.
