General dentistry addresses a wide range of dental concerns. General dental services focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental issues. The main aim of general dental care is to prevent dental issues from ever occurring. Since prevention is a key element of general dental care, most general dental care services revolve around dental checkups, dental x-rays, and teeth cleanings.
However, the other component of general dental services encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of dental issues. When a dental issue is diagnosed, developing and executing a treatment becomes the focus of general dental care. Thus, the second component of general dental care is restorative treatments aimed at resolving the dental issues. Dr. Dokhanchi and Dr. Micaletti of Fox Valley Dental offer general dental care that is both preventative and restorative.
Did You Know?
Without proper dental care, your mouth can be quite a dirty place. Plaque alone contains over 300 different strains of bacteria. While regular brushing and flossing can decrease this number, many people don’t brush for the recommended two minutes a day. In addition when you skip flossing, you miss cleaning 40% of your teeth’s surface. This is why good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups and cleanings are so important.

How should I prepare for my general dental care appointment at Fox Valley Dental?
To prepare for your dental appointment, you will want to pay special attention to your dental health and dental routine leading up to your dental appointment. You should think about what concerns you have about your oral health or routine, and make a list of questions to ask. To get you started, some questions you can ask are:
- What type of toothpaste should I be using?
- How is my brushing/flossing technique?
- Do I need mouthwash?
- How is my dental health and how can I improve it?
Additionally, new patients should look up our office location and prepare to arrive at our office about 10-15 minutes before their appointment time. This is so they will have time to fill out any necessary paperwork before their appointment begins.
What should I expect during my general dental care appointment at Fox Valley Dental?
Your general dental care appointment will begin with Dr. Dokhanchi and Dr. Micaletti performing an oral examination. They will evaluate your teeth, bite, and surrounding soft tissues for signs of dental decay, disease, or damage. They will also ask you about your oral health routine and if you have noticed any changes or if you have any concerns. They may also ask you about your overall health because some dental issues can be caused by overall health concerns and vice versa.
After your oral examination, they may also take dental x-rays. Dental x-rays are an important diagnostic tool because they can detect cavities that may not be immediately visible and will provide information about your tooth roots and bony structures. During your dental x-rays, you may be asked to hold your cheeks away from your mouth or bite down on a small plastic disc. Dental x-rays shouldn’t cause any discomfort and only take a few minutes to complete. They also only use a tiny amount of radiation and are considered to be safe for both children and adults.
Once your dental x-rays and dental exam are complete, your general dental care appointment will conclude with a professional teeth cleaning. During a professional teeth cleaning, our dental hygienists will use a special tool called a scaler to gently scrape the surface of your teeth. This will remove excess plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. While plaque can usually be removed by regular brushing, tartar can only be removed by a scaler. After the scaler, our hygienists will brush your teeth will a gritty toothpaste to remove any remaining residue. Then, your teeth will be professionally flossed and rinsed with fluoride. The final step in your professional teeth cleaning is to apply a fluoride polish.
At this point, your general dental appointment will be concluded. However, if Dr. Dokhanchi and Dr. Micaletti found any dental issues during your checkup that require treatment, you may be asked to return at another time for additional restorative dental care.
Will I need to follow any special guidelines after my general dental care appointment at Fox Valley Dental?
After your general dental appointment, you will want to schedule your next dental appointment before leaving our office. If you are maintaining your preventative measures, this appointment will likely be six months out. However, if you are in need of restorative care, this appointment may be scheduled sooner.
Between checkups and appointments, you will want to continue to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes and flossing once a day. It is also important to make sure you are using an ADA-approved fluoridated toothpaste and replacing your toothbrush at least once every 3-4 months.
To keep your teeth healthy you will also want to avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Eating a good diet can also have many benefits for your teeth. Avoiding extra sugars and eating teeth-friendly foods will provide your teeth with the proper nutrients to thrive. To avoid damaging your teeth, you will also want to avoid using your mouth as an opener and wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports.
